PDF to PNG

This PDF to PNG converter draws the pages of a PDF as PNG pictures, one file per page, at the resolution you pick, taking every page or only the ones you name. The rendering happens on Docubox's servers, and you sign in with a free account (Google or an emailed code, no password) to download the images.

How to convert PDF to PNG

  1. Add your PDF. Drop one file onto the upload box or choose it from your device. A run takes 1 PDF, and it must open without a password.
  2. Confirm the format. Output format opens set to PNG on this page. The menu still lets you switch to JPEG if you change your mind.
  3. Pick a resolution. Resolution (DPI) offers 72, 110, 150 and 200, and starts at 150. Higher numbers give larger pictures with finer detail.
  4. Choose the pages. Pages starts on all. For one page, type its number, such as 4. For several, type a list like 2-5, 9.
  5. Select Convert to PNG. The PDF goes to private storage, then our servers draw each chosen page while a counter shows how many are finished.
  6. Sign in, then download. The result page asks for a free account, through Google or an emailed code, with no password. After that you can preview each PNG, download the ones you want, or save them to My documents.

When to use PDF vs PNG

A PDF stores a page as instructions: text, shapes and embedded pictures that a viewer draws at whatever size it likes. A PNG is the finished picture, a fixed grid of pixels. Converting turns a page into something you can drop into a slide, a web page, a chat message or an image editor.

  • PNG suits pages with text, charts and line art. Its compression is lossless, so edges and small type come out as drawn, where a JPG can add faint smudging. PDF to JPG is the better pick when pages are mostly photographs and you want smaller files.
  • The words become pixels. You can no longer select, copy or search the text, and Docubox does not read it back during this conversion. If the PDF is a scan and you need the words, OCR to text reads printed English from it.
  • Choose the DPI by where the picture is going. DPI means pixels per inch of page, so a picture's size in pixels is the page size in inches times the DPI. A US Letter page, 8.5 by 11 inches, comes out near 935 by 1,210 pixels at 110 and near 1,275 by 1,650 at 150. Too low a number blurs small type, and too high a number makes heavy files.
  • Mind the file size. A PNG of a plain text page stays small, but a page full of photographs can be several times bigger than the same page as a JPG. PNG has no quality slider, so for lighter files lower the DPI or switch the format to JPEG. If the PNG files together would be too large, the conversion stops with a message suggesting fewer pages.

Things to know

  • Pages are drawn on white. Each PNG is an ordinary full-color picture without a transparency channel, so anything see-through in the PDF shows as white. A page rotated inside the PDF stays rotated, and comments and filled-in form fields are drawn in.
  • One PNG per page. A file called report.pdf gives report-page-1.png, report-page-2.png and so on, listed in page order whatever order you typed them in. Nothing is zipped. The result page lets you preview, download or save each image on its own, and one button saves them all to My documents.
  • Page numbers are positions. Page 1 is the first page of the file, whatever number is printed on it, and a page listed twice is made once. Letters, a reversed range such as 6-3, or a number past the last page are refused with a message that says why.
  • Very large pages may come out smaller than asked. A poster or big drawing can be drawn below the DPI you chose so the picture stays within a size limit, and the result page shows a note when that happens. The highest DPI offered is 200.
  • Limits. The PDF can be up to 25 MB and 50 pages, counted over the whole file, so a longer PDF is refused even when you ask for page 1; Split PDF accepts longer files and can cut out the section first. A PDF that needs a password to open is refused with a message asking you to remove it, while one that only restricts printing, copying or editing opens normally. A free account can run 10 conversions a day, and one run counts once however many pages it draws. Pro, at $9.99 a month, includes 500 conversions a month (the free plan has 10 a day) and 25 GB of saved documents, without raising the per-PDF limits.

To turn the PNG files back into a single PDF later, Images to PDF accepts PNG images and keeps them in the order you set.

Frequently asked questions

Will the text in my PNG files look sharp?

PNG is lossless, so the picture shows exactly what was drawn, with no compression smudging. How crisp small type looks depends on the resolution: 72 DPI leaves few pixels per letter and can look soft, while 150 and 200 give cleaner type. If the text looks blurry, convert again at a higher DPI.

How large will the PNG files be?

It depends on the page and the DPI. A page of plain text on white makes a modest file, while a full-page photograph at 200 DPI is the heaviest case, because the pixel count grows with the square of the DPI. A lower resolution or fewer pages keeps the files lighter.

Can I get a PNG with a transparent background?

No. Pages are drawn on white, and the PNG files carry no transparency channel, so see-through parts of the PDF appear white. If you need a cut-out against another background, you would have to remove the white in an image editor afterward.

How do I convert only one page to PNG?

Before you convert, type the page number into Pages, such as 7, instead of leaving it on all. You get a single PNG for that page. A range like 3-5 or a list like 1, 4-6 works too, and the images always come out in page order.

Do I need an account to download the PNG files, and how long do they last?

Yes. You sign in with a free account, using Google or an emailed one-time code, to see and download the result. Your upload and the PNG files are temporary and expire 24 hours after you start; a download does not extend that. Save to my documents keeps a copy until you delete it.
