JPG to PNG

This JPG to PNG converter saves JPG photos and images as PNG files, a lossless format that works well as an editing copy. The conversion runs on Docubox's servers, and you sign in with a free account (Google or an emailed code, no password) to download the PNG files.

How to convert JPG to PNG

  1. Add your JPG files. Drop them into the upload box or use its browse link. The box names JPG as the accepted type, and both .jpg and .jpeg endings work. One run takes up to 10 files.
  2. Leave the options as they are. Once a file is in the list, the options appear below it, and Output format already reads PNG. Quality and Background for transparency are listed as well, but neither changes a PNG.
  3. Select Convert to PNG. Your JPG files go to private storage, with upload progress measured in bytes. Our servers then convert each one, and the page steps through Preparing, Converting and Checking result while it counts finished images.
  4. Sign in when the result is ready. Choose Google or an emailed code. The account is free, and there is no password to create.
  5. Download or save each PNG. A single result shows a preview with Download and Save to my documents buttons. With several files, each PNG gets its own row showing its type and size, with Download and Save buttons, and a Save all button saves the files you have not saved yet in one go.

When a PNG copy of a JPG makes sense

Converting a JPG to a PNG changes how the picture is stored, not how good it is. The JPG already discarded fine detail when it was saved, and that detail does not return. What you gain is a file that is not squeezed lossily again each time you save it.

  • Editing over several sessions. Opening and re-saving a JPG compresses it once more every time, and the flaws pile up. Do your edits on a PNG copy, then export a fresh JPG at the end for sharing.
  • A site or program that insists on PNG. App icons, game assets, slide templates and some upload forms ask for PNG by name.
  • Transparency later, not now. A PNG can hold see-through areas, but this conversion does not create any. A JPG has none to begin with, so every pixel comes out solid. Cut out the background in an image editor and save from there.
  • Expect a much bigger file. A photograph stored as a PNG is usually far larger than the same photograph as a JPG, so keep the JPG for email, web pages and anything with a size cap.
  • Hard edges are kept as they are. Text or line art that was saved as a JPG may show faint speckles beside its edges. The PNG preserves those speckles; it does not clean them up.

Things to know

  • Nothing is added or repaired. The PNG shows the same picture as the JPG, with no transparent areas and no recovered detail. The Quality setting applies only to JPEG and WebP output, so it has no effect here.
  • Black and white stays black and white. A grayscale JPG becomes a grayscale PNG, not a color one.
  • Phone photos come out upright. If the JPG carries a rotation flag, Docubox turns the pixels to match and writes no flag, so the PNG looks the same in every app. A multi-picture JPG, which some phones create, is converted from its main picture.
  • CMYK files switch color model. A CMYK JPG, the kind print workflows often produce, is converted to RGB using its embedded color profile when it has a usable one. Some colors can shift slightly, and the result page says a conversion happened.
  • Camera details stay behind. The camera model, shooting date, location and other EXIF or XMP data, plus any comment, are not copied into the PNG. A color profile that matches the picture is kept. This is a converter rather than a privacy tool, so it does not check its output for leftovers.
  • Big photos make very big PNGs. If one PNG, or the finished files together, would be too large, the run is refused with a message saying so. Convert fewer photos at a time, or reduce their pixel size first with Resize image.
  • Names and files. holiday.jpg comes out as holiday.png. Each photo gets its own PNG; nothing is zipped or merged. One damaged or oversized photo stops the entire run, so remove it and start again.
  • Limits. A run accepts up to 10 JPG files totaling no more than 25 MB, and each picture may be up to 40 megapixels. Pro, at $9.99 a month, includes 500 conversions a month (the free plan has 10 a day) and 25 GB of saved documents, but does not raise these per-run limits.

To turn a PNG back into a smaller JPG, use PNG to JPG. The full Convert image tool has every output format and option, and you can change any option on this page too.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting JPG to PNG make the picture sharper?

No. A JPG has already lost fine detail by the time you have it, and a PNG can only store what is left. The converted file looks like the JPG, with nothing restored. What changes is that you can open the PNG and save it again without it being lossily compressed each time.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than my JPG?

A JPG saves space by discarding detail, while a PNG keeps every pixel it is given, so a photo usually grows a lot when it becomes a PNG. If size matters, keep the JPG for sharing, or reduce the picture's dimensions with Resize image before you convert it.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

No. A JPG has no transparent areas, so every pixel in the PNG is solid. To get transparency, open the PNG in an image editor, remove the background there and save it again as PNG. Converting here only changes the format of the file.

Is JPG to PNG free, and what are the limits?

Yes. A free account can run 10 conversions a day, with up to 10 JPG files in each run, and the result page says no payment is required. Pro, at $9.99 a month, is for people who convert often or keep many saved files; it does not raise the per-run limits.

Do I need an account, and how long do my PNG files last?

You can upload and convert first, but downloading needs a free account, which you open with Google or an emailed code. Unsaved results stay available for 24 hours from the moment you start. Downloading neither deletes them nor extends that time; choosing Save to my documents is what keeps a file.
