Tools/WebP to JPG

WebP to JPG

This WebP to JPG converter turns WebP images, such as pictures saved from websites, into JPG files that nearly every app, upload form and editor can open. Docubox converts them on its servers, and you download the JPG files after signing in with a free account (Google or an emailed code, no password).

How to convert WebP to JPG

  1. Choose your WebP images. Add them through the upload box or its browse link. The picker on this page is set to files ending in .webp, up to 10 in one run. Animated WebP files are fine to add.
  2. Look at the three options. They appear once a file is listed. Output format is already JPEG. Quality starts at 85 and takes a number from 50 to 100. Background for transparency starts on White and decides which color shows wherever the image was see-through.
  3. Pick the fill that suits where the picture will go. White works for documents and light pages. Black suits a dark layout. If your WebP has no transparent areas, this choice changes nothing.
  4. Select Convert to JPEG. The WebP files are uploaded to private storage, then our servers convert each one. The page shows its current stage and how many images are finished.
  5. Sign in, then download. Google or an emailed code gets you in, and the account is free with no password. Each JPG appears in the result list with Download and Save buttons; Save puts a copy in My documents, beyond the temporary window.

When to use WebP vs JPG

WebP is a newer image format that websites use to keep pages light. It can store transparency and animation, and it comes in lossy and lossless varieties. JPG is older and simpler, and nearly every program, print service, upload form and email client accepts it. Converting is mostly about reaching those places.

  • Convert when something refuses the WebP. Older photo editors, office programs and some application or ID-photo forms ask for JPG. Many current apps open WebP without trouble, so check what the destination accepts before you convert.
  • Transparency is the main loss. A JPG fills every see-through pixel with a solid color. For a logo or sticker that must stay transparent, convert it to a PNG instead, with WebP to PNG.
  • Motion is lost as well. JPG holds a single frame, so an animated WebP turns into one still picture.
  • Quality takes a second hit. JPG is always lossy, so a WebP that was already compressed is compressed again. In a photo this is often hard to notice at the default setting, but small text, thin lines and flat color areas can show some fuzz, and a higher Quality number reduces it.
  • The file size can go either way. WebP is often the smaller of the two formats, so the JPG may come out larger. Lowering Quality shrinks it.

Things to know

  • You get a choice of two fill colors. Transparent areas become white or black, set under Background for transparency. Partly transparent pixels, such as a soft shadow, blend into that color. Other colors are not offered, so if you need one, add it in an image editor first.
  • Animated files give their first frame. The result page notes that only the first frame was used.
  • Lossy and lossless WebP files both work. Either way, the JPG is a fresh lossy compression at your Quality setting, so a lossless WebP does not give a lossless JPG.
  • Orientation and color profile. A rotation flag stored in the file is applied to the pixels, so the JPG looks upright everywhere. An embedded color profile that fits the picture is kept. Other metadata is not copied, and no check is made for leftovers, so this is not a privacy tool.
  • Names and files. sticker.webp comes out as sticker.jpg. Each image becomes its own file, with no ZIP and no merging. If one image is damaged or over the pixel limit, none of them are converted.
  • Limits. A run takes up to 10 WebP files totaling no more than 25 MB, and each image may be up to 40 megapixels. Pro, at $9.99 a month, is aimed at frequent users and does not raise these per-run limits.

If the JPG files come out larger than you want, Compress image can shrink them further, and Images to PDF can put them into a single PDF in the order you set.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my WebP image open or upload, and will JPG fix it?

Some older programs, forms and services predate WebP and only recognize formats such as JPG. Converting gives you a file they usually accept, but check what the destination asks for. Photos usually come through well; animation does not carry over, and transparent areas are filled with white or black.

What happens to the transparent parts of my WebP?

JPG cannot be transparent, so Docubox fills those areas with the color under Background for transparency: white unless you switch it to black. Partly transparent pixels blend into that color. No other fill color exists, and for transparent output you would choose PNG instead.

Can I convert an animated WebP to JPG?

Yes, but you get one still picture, taken from the first frame, because a JPG cannot store motion. The result page tells you that only the first frame was used. If you need every frame, this conversion will not provide them.

Does WebP to JPG reduce quality?

Usually a little. A JPG is always compressed with loss, so the picture is compressed once more even if the WebP was lossless. At the default Quality of 85 a photo often looks the same, while sharp text and thin lines may soften. A higher Quality number keeps more detail and makes a larger file.

How long can I download my JPG files?

Downloading needs a free account, opened with Google or an emailed code. Unsaved results expire 24 hours after you start, and a download does not delete a file or add time. Choose Save to my documents on any JPG you want to keep longer.
