PNG to JPG

Change PNG pictures into JPG files, choosing how much detail to keep and whether transparent areas turn white or black. The conversion runs on Docubox's servers, and downloading the JPG files needs a free account, which you create with Google or an emailed code and no password.

How to convert PNG to JPG

  1. Add your PNG files. Drag them onto the upload box or pick them from your device. Only files ending in .png are accepted on this page, up to 10 per run.
  2. Look at the options. Once a file is added, they show up under the file list. Output format is already JPEG here. Quality is a number from 50 to 100 and starts at 85, and Background for transparency starts on White.
  3. Adjust them if you need to. A lower Quality gives a smaller file with more visible compression. Switch Background for transparency to Black when transparent areas should come out black rather than white.
  4. Select Convert to JPEG. The PNG files go to private storage first, then our servers turn each one into a JPG while the page reports the current stage and a count of finished images.
  5. Sign in, then download. The result page asks you to sign in with Google or an emailed code. Accounts are free and have no password. Once you are in, you can preview each JPG and download it, or choose Save to my documents to keep it beyond the temporary window.

When to use PNG vs JPG

Both formats store pictures, but they compress differently. PNG is lossless: it keeps every pixel exactly and can store transparency. JPG is lossy: it discards fine detail to make the file smaller, and it cannot store transparency.

  • Choose JPG for photographs. A photo saved as PNG is usually far larger than the same photo as JPG, and JPG opens in nearly every app and browser, so it suits email, web pages and uploads with a size limit.
  • Keep PNG for screenshots, logos and line art. Flat colors, sharp edges and small text can show faint blur or speckles around their edges once they are compressed as JPG, and PNG keeps transparency, which JPG cannot.
  • Converting is a one-way step. Detail lost to JPG compression does not come back if you convert the JPG to PNG again, so keep your original PNG.
  • Pick Quality by how you will use the file. Higher numbers keep more detail and make bigger files. Even at 100, JPG is a lossy format.

Things to know

  • Transparent areas get a solid fill. A JPG has no transparency, so Docubox paints those areas with the color set under Background for transparency, which is White unless you pick Black. Soft or partly transparent edges, such as a drop shadow, blend into that color, and a PNG that marks one color as see-through instead of using a smooth transparency channel is filled the same way. No other fill colors are offered, so if you need one, add it in an image editor first and convert the edited picture.
  • Animated PNG files turn into a still picture. The JPG shows the first frame only, and a note on the result page says so.
  • JPG uses 8 bits per color channel. A 16-bit PNG is saved at 8 bits, so the extra precision is not kept, and for 16-bit grayscale the result page says so.
  • Embedded metadata is not copied. Text and other details stored in the PNG stay out of the JPG, while an embedded color profile is carried over. This is a format converter, not a privacy tool, and it does not check its output for leftover metadata.
  • Several PNG files make several JPG files. Each image becomes its own file named after the original, with .jpg at the end. Nothing is zipped or merged. The result page lists every file with its own preview, Download and Save buttons, and one button saves them all to My documents.
  • One problem file fails the whole run. If a single file is damaged, is not a valid image, or is over the pixel limit, no JPG files are produced for any of them. Take that file out and convert the rest again.
  • Limits. Each run takes up to 10 PNG files totaling no more than 25 MB. A single picture can be up to 40 megapixels (its width times its height, in millions of pixels), so a very large scan or stitched panorama may need shrinking first.

If a JPG is bigger than you want, lower Quality and convert again, or run it through Compress image. To send several pictures as one document, Images to PDF puts JPG files into a single PDF in the order you set.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PNG to JPG converter free?

Yes. With a free account you can run 10 conversions a day, and each run takes up to 10 PNG files. Nothing is charged between signing in and getting your JPG files. Pro, at $9.99 a month, includes 500 conversions a month (the free plan has 10 a day) and 25 GB of saved documents; it does not raise the per-run limits.

What happens to transparent areas in a PNG?

A JPG cannot hold transparency, so each transparent pixel is painted with the Background for transparency color: white by default, black if you switch it. Pixels that are only partly transparent blend into that color. To keep transparency, skip JPG: keep the PNG, or use the full Convert image tool to make a WebP, which also keeps it.

Does converting PNG to JPG reduce quality?

Yes, to some degree. A PNG stores every pixel exactly, but a JPG is always compressed with some loss, so fine detail can be softened. A higher Quality setting keeps more detail and makes a larger file, and even 100 is not lossless. Keep the original PNG in case you need the exact pixels later.

Can I convert several PNG files at once?

Yes, up to 10 in one run, with a combined size of up to 25 MB. Each PNG becomes its own JPG and nothing is zipped. You can download or save each file from the result page one at a time, or save all of them to My documents.

Do I need an account to download my JPG files, and how long do they last?

Yes. You can upload and convert before signing in, but viewing and downloading the result needs a free account (Google or an emailed code, no password). Your PNG files and the JPG results are temporary: access ends 24 hours after you start unless you choose Save to my documents, and downloading neither deletes them nor extends that time.
