Tools/WebP to PNG

WebP to PNG

This WebP to PNG converter changes WebP images into PNG files with their transparent areas kept, so programs that cannot open WebP can still use them. Docubox does the conversion on its servers; downloading the PNG files needs a free account, which you open with Google or an emailed code, no password.

How to convert WebP to PNG

  1. Add the WebP files. Drop them on the upload box or use its browse link. The picker here is limited to files ending in .webp, with up to 10 per run.
  2. Confirm the format says PNG. After a file is listed, a row of options shows up under it, with Output format set to PNG. You can leave Quality and Background for transparency alone: a PNG ignores the first, and the second matters only when the result is a JPEG.
  3. Select Convert to PNG. Each file uploads to private storage, and then our servers convert it. A progress bar counts finished images while the stage label changes from Preparing to Converting to Checking result.
  4. Sign in with a free account. Google or an emailed code both work, and no password is involved. You need to do this before the PNG files can be viewed or downloaded.
  5. Download the PNGs you need. Each one has its own row with a preview, Download and Save. Save copies a file into My documents, where it stays until you delete it; the rest vanish when the temporary window ends.

When to use WebP vs PNG

Both formats can hold transparent areas, soft edges included, so the choice rarely depends on looks. It depends on where the file is going. WebP can be lossy or lossless and is built for light web pages. PNG is always lossless and is understood by almost every editor.

  • Choose PNG for working files. Logos, icons, stickers and interface pieces get opened, resized and exported again. A PNG can be saved repeatedly without extra compression loss, and older design programs can open it.
  • Keep WebP for delivery on the web. WebP files tend to be smaller, which helps pages load, and current browsers display them.
  • A PNG will not repair a lossy WebP. If the WebP was saved with lossy compression, its small flaws are part of the picture, and the PNG stores them exactly as they are.
  • Photos get heavy as PNG. A photographic WebP can become much larger, while a flat-color graphic often stays compact. If you do not need transparency, WebP to JPG usually gives a much smaller file for a photo.

Things to know

  • Transparency comes through, soft edges and all. Fully transparent and partly transparent pixels both pass into the PNG. Nothing is flattened onto white or black here.
  • The PNG stores what Docubox reads from the WebP. Those pixels are written out without any new compression loss. The conversion cannot bring back detail a lossy WebP had already dropped.
  • Animated WebP files give one still. The PNG uses the first frame, and the result page says so.
  • Upright, with the profile kept. If the WebP has a rotation flag, the pixels are turned to match and no flag is written. A color profile that fits the picture stays with it; other embedded metadata does not, and the output is not checked for leftovers.
  • Check the edges afterward. Open the PNG over both a light and a dark background. If the WebP had a faint halo around its outline, the PNG keeps the halo, because the pixels are carried across as they are.
  • Naming. logo.webp becomes logo.png, one file per image. The results are not zipped or combined, and one unreadable image stops the run for all of them.
  • Limits. A single run accepts up to 10 WebP files with a combined size of up to 25 MB, and each image can be up to 40 megapixels. Pro, at $9.99 a month, includes 500 conversions a month (the free plan has 10 a day) and 25 GB of saved documents, rather than bigger runs.

If a PNG turns out larger than you can use, Resize image reduces its dimensions, and the full Convert image tool can save the same picture as a JPEG instead.

Frequently asked questions

Does WebP to PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. WebP images with transparent areas keep them in the PNG, including partly transparent edges such as soft shadows. Docubox does not paint anything behind them. The white or black Background for transparency choice is only used when the output is a JPEG.

Will the PNG look better than the original WebP?

No. The PNG matches the picture Docubox reads from the WebP. If that WebP was saved with lossy compression, the PNG keeps its blur or blockiness rather than removing it. The benefit is that you can edit and save the PNG repeatedly without losing more detail.

Why is my PNG larger than the WebP?

PNG compresses without discarding anything, while WebP is often saved lossy, so the same picture usually takes more space as a PNG. The gap is biggest for photos. For a smaller file you can resize the picture first, or choose JPG when the image has no transparency.

Can I convert an animated WebP to PNG?

You can upload it, but the PNG will be a still image made from the first frame only. The result page includes a note when that happens. A PNG from this converter is never animated, so other frames are not kept.

Is there a cost, and how long are my PNG files kept?

A free account can run 10 conversions a day, and Pro costs $9.99 a month and includes 500 conversions a month plus 25 GB of saved documents. Results are temporary: access ends 24 hours after you start unless you choose Save to my documents. Downloading does not delete a file or extend that time.
